The Titanic's keel was laid at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Northern Ireland on March 31, 1909. Two years later, on May 31, 1911, Titanic saw her launch. On Wednesday, April 10, 1912, she set off from Southampton. The crossing went smoothly until, due to numerous iceberg warnings, the lookout bell sounded on Sunday April 14, 1912) at about 23:40 (shipboard time). The ship struck the iceberg on the starboard side and sank after two hours and forty minutes in the icy waters of the Atlantic. Only 712 people survived the disaster.
