The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was developed in response to a 1937 proposal from the United States Army Air Corps. Its unique twin-boom design housed twin V12 engines, with the cockpit and weaponry in the central nacelle. With its impressive range, firepower, and carrying capacity, the P-38 proved to be a superior fighter-bomber, making a significant impact in Europe from 1942 and in the Pacific War later that year. Notably, it shot down Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto in 1943, boosting Allied morale.
