When eccentric entrepreneur Howard Hughes took control of Trans World Airlines (TWA) in 1939, he asked Lockheed to develop a new commercial airliner for him. The result was the innovative four-engine Super Constellation – nicknamed the 'Super Connie' – with its distinctive triple tail and dolphin-shaped fuselage. TWA bought the first 40 Connies off the production line, and would be the largest civilian operator of these aircraft.
