Supermarine's "Grudge" is a fighter aircraft equipped with the British Rolls-Royce "Griffin" engine. In late 1942, Supermarine designers were concerned that the elliptical wings used on the Spitfire fighter would produce significant induced drag at high subsonic speeds, thus limiting the aircraft's high-speed performance. To overcome this, they decided to adopt a new laminar wing, which had already been used on North American's P-51 Mustang fighter.
