The revolutionary design of the F4U Corsair was created in 1938 in response to a request from the US Navy to design a high-speed fighter for aircraft carriers. Chance Vought rose to the occassion, with the goal of fitting the most powerful engine available (i.e. The Pratt-Whitney Double Wasp engine) into the smallest possible airframe. After the end of WWII, the F4 remained in service and took part in the Korean War (1950-1953).
