The 923 series is an electric track comprehensive test car for the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen, manufactured in 2000 to run at 270km/h and to replace the ageing 922 series. It is a 7-car train based on the 700 series, with cars 1-3 and 6 being used to test electrical equipment, car 4 being used to test track equipment, and the other cars being used as meeting rooms and tour guide rooms. The body colour is different from the general Tokaido Shinkansen cars, with yellow and blue stripes, affectionately known as "Doctor Yellow."
