In early 1944, the Imperial Japanese Navy 253rd Kokutai operated Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero fighters from bases in the South Pacific, including Tobera Airfield near Rabaul. In February 1944, as Allied pressure increased, the group's remaining Zeros flew defensive missions and were subsequently withdrawn northward to Truk, reflecting the shrinking Japanese front line.
