The USS Des Moines is the first of its class of heavy cruisers. She was laid down in 1945 and was ultimately commissioned in 1948. Equipped with the world's first automatic loading device that used cased charges for the main gun with a firing rate of 10 shots per minute. This ship engaged in numerous missions from its home port of Newport.
