The Smith Class detsroyers were a class of destroyers of the United States Navy. In 1903, the US Navy formulated a long-term plan for the defence of its battleship forces, which demanded one destroyer for every battleship.
The USS Smith was the lead ship of the Smith-class destroyers, and was named after Captain Joseph B Smith, a monitor crew member who was killed in the Battle of Hampton Roads during the American Civil War.
