The Supermarine Spitfire is probably the most famous British fighter of World War II. It was an all-metal, low-wing aircraft with characteristic elliptical wings, a classic tailplane and a retractable undercarriage. The prototype first flew on 5 March 1936. The Spitfire proved to be the basic RAF aircraft during the war, and it continued to operate successfully after the war, remaining in production for 10 years.
