Since its launch in 1948, the Land Rover has been used for heavy duties (just like the US Jeep) by the military, police, and firefighting services. The Land Rover used an aluminum body on its ladder frame due to the limited availability of steel in England after WWII, not for its lighter weight. In 1990 it added ‘Defender’ to its name to differentiate from the new ‘Discovery’ model that was launching the following year.
